"As your council member, I will be honest, fair, and completely transparent. I will make every decision with the citizens in mind and I hope to help bring an excited and revitalized feeling to Laguna Beach."
Larry and his family have been part of this community since 1984.
The #1 job of a City is to ensure the public safety of its citizens. Larry will work with his colleagues on Council to ensure that the police, fire and lifeguard departments are adequately staffed and trained — and understand the safety priorities of the City.
He wants to make sure living in Laguna Beach is enjoyable, convenient, and safe. He spearheaded the ordinance restoring views to homes blocked by vegetation. He worked effectively to convince the Council that the historic inventory was intended to be voluntary, and was not maintianed according to the law, providing relief to over 500 households. He will continue to work for practical change that helps the people who live here.
Larry has worked hard in the community to ensure equal access to all. Access to government, access to facilities and access to our own streets and sidewalks. He is concerned with the seasonal gridlock not only in the downtown, but also in the Canyon, the arterial streets and all of Coast Highway. Parking is clearly inadequate And must finally be resolved. Real permit streamlining for both residential and commercial owners Is essential.
The City Council and other discretionary boards must be nimble and flexible. Evaluate the way that residents use the City. Continue to improve the quality of life. Appreciate the needs of residents collectively and individually. Seasonal uses of facilities are well established, but explore off season uses of large facilities to give Laguna a year round economy. Continue to refine the uses in the downtown and other commercial and tourist corridors. Embrace new ways to go about things to help businesses stay successful and provide retail for residents.
Larry knows the value of being able to adapt, especially during these challenging times. Larry will work to explore new ways that the City can adapt to meet the changing needs of Laguna Beach residents and businesses.
Locals and tourists alike value Laguna Beach for its beautiful oceans, beaches and vast open green spaces and trails. Larry knows how important it is to protect these treasures and will work hard to preserve the city's natural resources and attractions. Risk of fire, sources of water and air pollution must be prime considerations in maintaining and sustaining a safe and healthful environment.
Larry understands the importance of citizen participation in the public forum. Politics on a state and national level is polarized and truth has become a casualty. The result is a government that cannot deal with major issues. Laguna Beach cannot fall victim to this trend. Fear mongering raised its head in the last election. False statements creep into the dialogue. Larry will work actively to ensure that the public square is a place of respect.
This is about “vision.” Laguna Beach will always be a destination because it is beautiful and charming. All of us want to retain these qualities, we have different ideas as to how to achieve these goals. We know that positive change is necessary to adapt to economic and social change. Just saying “NO” to everything is not a solution. Larry hopes to create positive change within Laguna Beach, keeping an open mind as to how we might improve the way we do things. Reduce traffic impacts, improve fire safety, improve the pedestrian experience, improve the shopping experience, improve the entertainment experience and improve the living experience. Many possibilities await us . We must rise to meet them.
